Le Lac d’Issarlès
Five kilometers in circumference, the gorgeous natural lake of Issarlès is a high touristic place, the ideal spot for nature lovers and for swimming.
At the foot of the Cherchemuse (1343m), the lake of Issarlès is a cauldron-like volcanic lake formed by a violent underground eruption a million years ago. This 138-meters-deep former maar is one of the deeper lakes in France. Its exceptional depth explains its pristine blue color and water clarity.
The village became independent from the estate of Issarlès in 1929. In 1953, EDF began the construction of a hydroelectric power station. Their plan was to supply the power station of Montpezat sous Bauzon with underground pipes.
On the path that runs around the lake, you can visit the troglodyte houses dug into the rocks. Those were the warden’s home until 1930. On the main alley, the village has many restaurants, hotels and shops. Deeper in the village where many legends still need to be unraveled, you can admire traditional houses as well as the village church.
